Activities related to Emerging Diseases

The 15th Congress of the Federation of Asian Veterinary Associations (FAVA) and FAVA/OIE Joint Symposium (Bangkok, Thailand, 27-29 October 2008)

The 15th Congress of the Federation of Asian Veterinary Associations (FAVA 2008) and FAVA/OIE Joint Symposium was held in Bangkok with attendees of about 900 participants, 200 of which were from abroad and 700 from Thailand. Major participants were veterinary scientists, government representatives as well as representatives from the private sector.

Prof. Dr Royal Princess Chulabhorn presided over the opening of the Congress with the theme of Food Safety and Veterinary Roles for the World Kitchen, on 27 October.

Dr Jean-Luc Angot, Deputy Director General of OIE, presented the paper on OIE Policies, Good Governance and Strengthening of Veterinary Services, on behalf of Dr Bernard Vallat, Director General of OIE, during the opening ceremony.

For FAVA/OIE Joint Symposium, three presentations on Emerging and Transboundary Animal Diseases and one panel discussion were made.

Dr T. Fujita of OIE Asia-Pacific presented the paper on Global framework to control transboundary animal diseases. Prof. Corrie Brown, Georgia University, USA discussed Impact of Emerging Diseases on Food Safety, and Prof. Yasuhiro Yoshikawa, Tokyo University, Japan spoke about Epidemiological Study on BSE Outbreak in Japan.

Panel discussion was made for Regional (Asian) cooperation in combating Avian Influenza under the chairmanship of Dr Gardner Murray, President of the OIE Regional Commission for Asia, the Far East and Oceania, and with participants from Bangladesh, PR China, Indonesia, RO Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.
