Bangkok (Thailand), 13 April 2022 — The OIE Sub Regional Representation for South East Asia (SRR SEA) organised a 6-week virtual training programme in infectious disease modelling, in partnership with the EpiCentre, Massey University, New Zealand, OIE’s collaborative centre for veterinary epidemiology and public health for the Asia and the Pacific. The training course was attended by 32 technical officers of the Veterinary Services of 12 countries in South-East Asia and the Pacific.

The training introduced infectious disease modelling concepts and its practical applications. Participants learned about the process of building, analysing, and explaining a simple infectious disease model. The course consisted of self-learning modules and live interactive sessions over Zoom.

Training modules covered the data requirements to build a disease model, intervention scenarios, and guidance on how to use the outputs from a model. These are primarily used to support recommendations for the control of the infectious diseases.

The training programme’s goal is to strengthen the capacity of Veterinary Services in South-East Asia to control and manage infectious diseases. The key concept is that making and applying models produce data that support decision-making when government actors and other stakeholders plan strategies to manage these and related issues.
