The 3rd OIE Regional Workshop on Animal Feed Safety / FAMIC Virtual Training on Heavy metals

Header

With the growing demand for foods of animal origin globally, especially in developing countries in Asia-Pacific, the demand for feed, both for terrestrial and aquatic animals, continues to increase which leads to increasing international distribution of feed. Ensuring animal feed safety is crucial because it has a direct impact on animal health and welfare and also on food safety and human health. Veterinary Services play important roles in feed safety by setting standards on possible hazards on feed safety based on proper risk assessment, inspection of manufactures and their products, and providing appropriate guidance to farmers.

The Food and Agricultural Materials Inspection Center (FAMIC) is the OIE Collaborating Centre for Animal Feed Safety and Analysis and has been providing relevant expertise and supporting the development of relevant standards.

In January 2019, the OIE RRAP organised the 2nd OIE Regional Workshop on Animal Feed Safety in collaboration with FAMIC to review and update the progress of Feed Safety issues since the 2010 Regional Workshop on feed safety. In the workshop, relevant issues related to feed safety were discussed and recommendations were made to OIE Members in the region, OIE and FAMIC. Following the recommendations, FAMIC established a Laboratory Network on Animal Feed Safety in Asia and the Pacific. In addition, based on the workshop recommendations and to respond to needs from the regional Members, FAMIC organised a virtual training on heavy metals for laboratories in charge of Feed Safety in the region. Taking this opportunity, RRAP organised the 3rd Regional Workshop on Animal Feed Safety back-to-back with the virtual training by FAMIC. Considering the constraint of virtual format, shortage of time and the theme of the training by FAMIC, this workshop focus on feed safety related to chemical hazards.

The objectives of the meeting were

  • To raise awareness of the importance of Feed Safety
  • To review and share the current situation and issues related to chemical hazards in animal feed in the region
  • To strengthen regional network among regional Members for ensuring the feed safety including the feed safety laboratory network

In addition to nominees from members, regional laboratory network on animal feed safety members were invited to the meeting and 54 participants from 13 countries joined in total.
