Regional Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance Control in Animals

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) hosted the 2nd Global Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance and Prudent Use of Antimicrobial Agents in Animal from 29 to 31 October 2018, in Marrakesh, Morocco, to bring the global leaders in animal health from the private and public sectors and civil society to discuss new ideas and solutions to the global rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Followed the global conference, a half-day regional meeting for Asia and the Pacific was organized by OIE Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific (OIE RRAP) and Sub-Regional Representation for South East Asia (OIE SRR-SEA). The objectives of the meeting are to: 1) introduce OIE activities to support member countries implement their National Action Plans on AMR in the region; and 2) to strengthen regional collaboration for AMR control activities among OIE, member countries, and OIE partners in the region.

Overview of the meeting

More than 60 participants attended the meeting comprising the OIE delegates, OIE National Focal Points for Veterinary Products and their representatives; delegation of Member Countries; experts of OIE Collaborating Centres and Reference Labs; FAO, Fleming Fund, NACA; experts from private and public sectors; as well as OIE staff of HQ, RRAP and SRR-SEA.

The observations from various assessment reports, and the OIE on-going and planned activities (2018-2020) on AMR/AMU were presented to the participants.

Three Member Countries (Bangladesh, Japan, and the Philippines) presented their activities on the implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP), and the mechanisms/process put in place to monitor and evaluate the implementation.

Dr Tashi Sumdup, Vice-President of the Regional Commission and the OIE delegate to Bhutan, chaired the panel discussion session on regional collaboration to support animal health sector implement AMR control activities. The panelists included the representatives of FAO, Fleming Fund, OIE CC, NACA and OIE RR and SRR SEA. The discussion provided an open platform for sharing their experiences and concerns on supporting MCs in implementing the NAP. By taking this advantage, the OIE collected comments from MCs to understand their further demand.

The outputs from this regional meeting have provided valuable information for OIE, MCs and partners in planning future activities on AMR/AMU.
