Rabies Risk Assessment Workshop

Overview of the meeting

The OIE Rabies Risk Assessment Workshop held at Mercure Kuta Beach Hotel, Bali, 6─8 March 2019. It also provides a brief description of the methodology used during the workshop.

Despite numerous regional initiatives, the rabies situation in the ASEAN region has deteriorated over the past few years. The northern part of West Malaysia reported a rabies incursion in 2015, and Sarawak in East Malaysia in 2017. West Kalimantan in Indonesia, which was considered free of rabies for many years, has experienced outbreaks since 2015. There has also been a  resurgence of rabies in Bali, Indonesia, and both Thailand and northern Vietnam have reported increasing outbreak frequencies. In January 2019, an outbreak in Sumbawa, Nusa Tenggara Barat, Indonesia was reported. The island of Sumbawa has been historically free of rabies.
