The 1st OIE Sub-Regional Virtual Workshop on Veterinary Education Establishment (VEE) Accreditation

Header

Veterinary Services (VS) are a global public good. High quality veterinary education and strengthened veterinary statutory bodies (VSBs) are major pillars of the good governance and quality of VS worldwide. While Veterinary Education Establishments (VEEs) offer curriculum to educate veterinary students, Veterinary Statutory Bodies (VSBs) have authority to regulate minimum initial and continuous educational requirements and competencies for the various professional categories of veterinarians and categories of veterinary paraprofessionals to be licensed or registered by the VSB to perform the activities of veterinary medicine/science.

Accreditation of VEEs is recognized as an integral part of quality assurance for veterinary education. It is a system to ensure that education is based on competencies that meet social needs and promote a culture of continuous quality improvement of VEEs which will support the development of a well-educated veterinary workforce to perform activities of VS in protection of human and animal health. In addition, through the accreditation process a VSB is able to be fully dedicated to protecting the students’ rights on educational investment, assisting VEEs to improve veterinary medical education, and assuring the public that accredited programs provide a quality education.

The OIE SRR-SEA with funding support from the Australian Government is organising a virtual workshop namely “The 1st OIE Sub-Regional Virtual Workshop on VEE Accreditation” on 27th August, 1st and 6th September 2021. Participants are the representatives of VEEs and VSBs in ASEAN Member States (AMS). The workshop will address the model for development of ASEAN VEE accreditation standards which could be managed and harmonised across the AMS to facilitate the veterinary mobility within ASEAN, and in particular the use of an evaluation tool to evaluate the OIE Day One Competencies of graduating veterinarians.

OBJECTIVES

The 1st OIE Sub-Regional Virtual Workshop on VEE Accreditation is aimed to:

  1. provide a platform for discussion on the development of ASEAN VEE accreditation standards
  2. provide model for the development of the ASEAN VEE accreditation standards and processes
