OIE/FAO-APHCA Regional Workshop on Animal Feed Safety
"Feed Borne Disease Prevention" in collaboration with FAMIC and RCFS
(Tokyo and Saitama-city, Japan, 12-15 July 2010)
The Regional Workshop on Animal Feed Safety "Feed Borne Disease Prevention" jointly organised by the OIE and FAO-APHCA, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Materials Inspection Center (FAMIC) and the Research Center for Food Safety (RCFS), was held in Tokyo and Saitama-City, Japan from 12 to 15 July 2010.
The main objectives of this Workshop were (1) to identify feed safety issues in the Region, (2) to develop an understanding/appreciation that feed safety is essential for both animal health and food safety, (3) to raise awareness of the relevant international standards and standard-setting procedures and (4) to inform participants about the role and function of the relevant OIE Collaborating Centres in the Region.
As indicated in the programme, two and a half days (12, 13 and 15 July) were for lectures, country paper presentations and discussion, and one day (14 July) was for laboratory visits including demonstrations at FAMIC.
Veterinarians working in feed safety regulation or feed safety analysis gathered from twenty countries/territories. Although some difference was observed among participants’ interes, participants seemed to have had a good learning experience and to have been trying to better understand feed borne disease prevention situation in their own countries. The group discussion was a particular success, where many ideas for recommendation were produced. The demonstration of tests and analysis at FAMIC, in which some participants could even participate actively, was useful to provide them a real feeling for how to put their work in practice.
Recommendations include expectations that the OIE and FAO will support the region to move forward to better feed safety, in particular for initiatives by the OIE Collaborating Centres in hazard information and monitoring results sharing, and development of analytical methods that are practical for prioritized hazards in the region. Participants expressed their desire to attend a follow-up Workshop in two to three years.
